Good ODesk Profiles – 7 Tips That Will Help You Succeed

Your oDesk profile (or Elance, Guru, and other freelance writing sites) is your most important asset. It makes the difference between you and the thousands of other oDesk contractors competing for a job. Therefore, you need to make sure that your profile is as good as possible.

1. Emphasize what’s important

The first thing that you should consider when editing your profile page is what information you will include. A good profile should not be too loaded with information. Think that the employer will decide in minutes, maybe even seconds, if you are suitable for your needs.

You want to make sure that the information that matters – experience, skills, references is visible and easily accessible. Focus on what is really important, rather than making huge lists of skill or completed projects.

2. Show off your best work

A portfolio is a must for a good oDesk profile. Use the built-in portfolio on oDesk to make a display of your best achievements. This can include web pages, pictures, writing samples, and just about anything you consider worthy. Keep in mind the first point, so don’t exaggerate.

3. Be persuasive

On oDesk, Elance or Guru, your profile is your business card. What you say about can convince the potential employers. To create a persuasive oDesk, describe yourself in powerful terms that employers like to hear. Use professional, expert, skilled, etc. Avoid words that suggest that you are inexperienced. Don’t tell the employers that you are a “quick learner” or “up-and-coming”. They will be influenced by them, even if they don’t realize it.

4. Be honest

Don’t lie in your profile, or at least don’t exaggerate too much your skills. This can turn on you later, by creating false expectations from the employers. A lie in your oDesk or Elance profile can also damage your reputation, both on oDesk and offline. A profile doesn’t need to be spectacular to be successful. Just clearly mention your skills and qualities and you should be fine.

6. Complete the profile

Don’t leave empty spaces into your profile. They look really bad. Try to find about all the relevant things about you, which might impress a potential employer. For example, if you have good computer skills, mention them, even if you are a freelance writer. They might prove useful someday, and they will also look good in your profile.

7. Ask an expert

The best oDesk profile is sincere, professional and well-thought. Give it some time, and don’t just rush it. It’s essential for your future success on oDesk, Elance and just about any other freelancing sites. If you really want to have a high quality profile, look for the advice of experienced freelancers. They always have good insight on what works and what doesn’t, so you may obtain some precious advice from an oDesk expert.

A very interesting way to make money from home is by accepting and accomplishing online freelancer jobs. There are several websites that have good opportunities here, such as Freelancer, Scriptlance, oDesk, PeoplePerHour, Guru and eLance to name a few. The principle of all these online freelancer jobsites is mostly the same-you get project notifications, then you bid for them if you are interested and if the employers are interested, they get in touch with you. There may be negotiations and some general discussion before any project poster decides they want to accept your bid. Once that happens, you can start work and get paid as decided upon.

However, though this seems so limpidly clear, there are many people who are cheated through these online freelancer jobsites. In most cases, it is because they did something wrong while placing their bid.

Hence, the success of your online freelancing tasks depends on the kind of bid you place. You have to be very meticulous here. Here are some things that you have to keep in mind while bidding.

1. Do not bid on each and every project that comes your way. Most online freelancing jobsites give their members a selected number of bids per month. So, you have to use your bids wisely.

2. Always makes sure to read the project instructions in full. Do not just look at the title and assume that you have understood everything.

3. The task must seem like something you can do. If there is even one aspect in the project description that you cannot accomplish, you should give it a pass and wait for something better to come your way. Remember that these project posters can rate and review you. So, if you cannot do a good job, you may get a bad rating and that can affect your future prospects on the website.

4. Apart from looking at the project description, you should also look at the budget of the project poster. Do you think this is a reasonable budget? Is what you are hoping to get within this range? If the money is not good, don’t bid.

5. Look at the deadline also. Most project posters will tell when they want their jobs to be submitted by. You have to make sure you have the time to work and that you can finish the project within the stipulated timeframe.

6. Look also at the reviews that the employer has got. See what other people are saying. Are they complaining about insufficient instructions, poor communication, rude behavior, delay in payment, etc.? These are things you have to be very careful about.

7. How comfortable are you with the whole thing? You need to be completely satisfied. If there is something you wish to know more about, you can post a message for the employer in a clarification board.

If everything is well and as per your liking, then you can go ahead and bid. Best of luck!

What is Data Entry?

There are a lot of Data Entry openings on oDesk, Freelancer, vWorker, eLance and other Freelancing sites. These are the least paying jobs in the industry but they can certainly help you to get your foot into the door of the freelancing world.

Data Entry projects usually entails the entry/update/price fixing of products on eCommerce sites.

When accepting an opening as a Data Entry contractor you will have to be able to do all the above mentioned.

eCommerce sites usually have a Backend and a Frontend.

The Frontend is the actual site which is visited by the business’ customers. This is where they can browse available products and purchase what they are interested in.

The backend is the administration area. This is where the site owner manages the site by adding payment gateways, special, products, reviews and prices. The backend also contains important information about the site such as ‘the most viewed’ products which will give the website owner an idea on what products receive the most attention.

The website owner will also be able to send out marketing letters and keep an eye on sales and problems regarding the site.

As a Data Entry Contractor, you will have access to these as well, but you are not allowed to change anything except when you are explicitly asked to do so. The employer trusts you with his livelihood and therefore it is not your place to niggle with basic settings!

Your job is to enter products and editing according to the guidelines received from the employer.

When adding a product there are four things that you will have to look at:

Adding the product

You will receive a product name and a product description. Product names are given in a certain way for SEO optimizing and should be used exactly as given to you. The description of the product should also contain the name of the product exactly as given to you. Make sure that the font and font size used is easy to read and that, when you access the product on the main site, it looks nice. Justification must be done and make sure that there are spaces between the paragraphs.

Adding Attributes

Attributes are the changeble things on a product. For example T-shirts that come in sizes S, M, L, XL and different colours. These are the attributes. Make sure that you follow the instructions of the contractor to the letter.

Categories

Products need to be categorized. You cannot have hundreds of products without some kind of order. Make sure that you add the product in the correct category.

Search Engine Optimization

This is where you will add the keywords. The keywords you use should be in the description of the product. You cannot use ’shirt’ in the keywords when the product is a skirt without a shirt. It is really very simple.

It might sound very complicated to you but after you have done the first ten or so, you will have the hang of adding products and the basic Data Entry requirements.

To help get your creative juices flowing, I’m going to talk to you about three ways to make extra money online.

Ghostwriting

There is a huge need for people who can write. Businesses are laying people off, or not hiring anybody because of the economy. But the work they have needs to get done. So, right now is a wonderful time to be a freelancer.

If you want to earn extra money online and you have writing skills, graphics, skills, programming or other skills, you can easily start doing freelance work for people. The website Elance is a great resource to help you find jobs. According to your skill set, you should also look into Rent-a-Coder.

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a great way to earn extra money online. Affiliate marketers are basically independent webmasters who build sites that sell products for other companies. The owner of the site makes a commission on the sale of the product. Commission percentages vary. They can be as low as 4% to as high as 75%. You can sell stuff through Amazon, or for independent entrepreneurs.

Programming

If you know a programming language like PHP or HTML, or if you can design websites, you’ll be in big demand online. This is sort of like ghostwriting, and you can use those same sites I mentioned, Elance and Rent-a-coder, to find work.

All in all, with a little effort you should be able to find some way of making at least a part-time income online. As I said at the beginning of this article, now is the time to get established if you want to earn extra money online.
